Tommie Trevino, CADTP

Tommie Trevino, CADTP is a substance abuse counselor at UCDAVIS Medical Center. Mr. Trevino is a founding member of the Alcohol and Drug Dependence (AOD) program started in 2015 by Dr. Moulin. The AOD program is a pilot treatment program that shifts the focus toward total patient care, addressing the combined drivers of socio-economic, mental health, and homelessness on alcohol and drug addictions.

Mr. Trevino been working as a Counselor for 16 years, bringing to the AOD program Substance Abuse Navigator experience, connecting patients with support organizations regionally and state- wide. The support organizations are tailored to address the underlying drivers in a patient’s substance abuse, be they socio-economic, mental health, or homelessness. He specializes in Emergency Department Counseling and, working with the medical team, he provides buprenorphine starts in the Emergency Department. In addition to these roles at UCDAVIS MC, he is a mentor with the California Bridge Program. Under Mr. Trevino’s leadership the Bridge program placed 52 Substance Abuse Navigators (SUNs) in hospitals in 2020. The program goal for 2021 is to place an additional 150 SUNs.

Mr. Trevino vets and prequalifies support organizations that receive substance abuse patients for treatment outside the hospital setting. He works with community clinics in starting their Medicated Assisted Programs (MAT) where clinics provide patients with naltrexone, suboxone, and vivitrol. A sample of his regional and state-wide resources include One Community Health, Sacramento American Native Health, and Transitions.

Mr. Trevino has been instrumental in the growth and national recognition of the UCDAVIS MC AOD program. Along with five other counselors from across the country, Mr. Trevino was invited to Washington D.C to help implement a similar program for Emergency Rooms across the Nation. Mr. Trevino hosted the U.S Surgeon General to further the National reach of the UCDAVIS MC AOD program.

The results of the AOD program drive the National interest. The UCDAVIS MC statistics reveal that, since the AOD program was conceived by Dr. Moulin and spearheaded by Mr. Trevino, 80% of the patients struggling with alcohol and drug dependencies have not returned to the Hospital setting. The program continues to grow. In January of 2020 two additional counselors were added to support the program. Mr. Trevino is planning to add an additional SUN in 2021.
